Summary
PHEM Logger does not collect, transmit, sell or share any personal data, usage data or analytics. There are no accounts, no servers the app talks to, and no third-party tracking or advertising. Everything you record (job timings, drugs, interventions, cardiac arrest events, observations and notes) is stored only on your device and stays under your control.
01About this policy
This policy explains how PHEM Logger ("the App") handles data. It applies to every version of the App: the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch apps distributed through the Apple App Store, and the Android app distributed through Google Play. The App handles data in the same way on every platform.
The App is developed and maintained by David Freeman, an independent developer based in the United Kingdom. This policy is written to comply with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
02Who we are
Email: phemlogger@hotmail.com
The developer does not receive or hold any data recorded in the App, so it does not act as a data controller or processor for that data. You, or the organisation you work for, remain in control of it on your device. Questions about this policy can be sent to the address above.
03What the app stores on your device
PHEM Logger is for use during prehospital emergency medical jobs and simulation. You enter everything it stores. It may hold:
- Job phase timestamps, such as activation, mobile, on scene, at patient, leaving scene and hospital arrival
- Drug administration records, such as drug, dose, route and time
- Intervention records, such as type and time
- Cardiac arrest event logs, such as rhythms, shocks, ROSC and initial events
- Vital signs snapshots and the NEWS2 scores calculated from them
- Free-text notes and ATMIST handover content
- Job outcomes, and intervals derived from all of the above
- App settings and saved printer details
The App does not ask for or require any patient identifiers. But free-text notes could contain identifiable details if you type them in. If so, they could be special category (health) data under UK GDPR Article 9. The App's built-in guide explains what should not be recorded. You are responsible for handling any identifiable data in line with your organisation's clinical governance policies and data protection law.
04Where your data is stored
Everything recorded in PHEM Logger is stored only on your device, in storage that belongs to the App and its companion watch and phone components.
- No data is sent to any external server, cloud service or third party.
- No internet connection is used or needed for any feature.
- No accounts, registration or sign-in are needed.
- Each device keeps its own records. If you use the App on more than one device, such as an Apple Watch and an iPhone, the data on each stays on that device. It is not synced between them and never passes through the developer.
Your phone's own backup system (iCloud or device backup on iOS, Android backup on Android) may include App data in your personal backup if you have turned that on. Those backups are run by Apple or Google under your own account and settings. PHEM Logger doesn't start or manage them, and the developer can't access them. Your organisation's policy may say whether clinical records may be held in personal backups.
05Data we don't collect
PHEM Logger does not collect, process or transmit:
- Personal identifiers, such as name, email address or NHS number
- Device identifiers or advertising identifiers
- Location data
- Contacts, photos, camera or microphone data
- Usage analytics or telemetry
- Crash reports sent to the developer or any third party
- Any data through third-party SDKs, analytics or advertising frameworks
If you choose to share crash or diagnostic data with app developers in your device settings, Apple or Google may pass anonymised crash reports to the developer under their own privacy policies. These reports contain no data you have recorded in the App.
06Device permissions
PHEM Logger only asks for a permission when it's needed for a feature you choose to use:
- Bluetooth is used only to find and connect to a supported thermal printer (Bixolon SPP-R310 or Zebra ZQ220 Plus) when you set one up or print. On Android this appears as the "Nearby devices" permission. Data goes straight from your device to your printer. Bluetooth is not used to track or locate you, and the App does not use it to work out your location.
- Notifications, sounds and vibration may be used for on-scene timing alerts you set up in Settings. On Android 13 and later, the App asks before showing notifications.
- Keeping the screen awake during a job is an optional setting. It needs no permission and collects no data.
You can turn any permission off at any time in your device settings. Features that need it, such as printing, will stop working, but the rest of the App will keep working.
08Third parties
PHEM Logger contains no third-party analytics, advertising, tracking or crash-reporting software development kits (SDKs). No data from the App is shared with, sold to or processed by any third party, because none is collected. Apple and Google run the app stores you download the App from. Their handling of your store account and purchases is covered by their own privacy policies.
09Security
Your data stays on your device, so it's protected by your device's own security: your passcode, Face ID, Touch ID or biometrics, and built-in storage encryption. We strongly recommend a device passcode on any phone or watch used for clinical work. Take the same care with exported files and printouts as with any other clinical record.
10Retention & deletion
The developer holds no user data, so there is nothing for us to keep or delete. Data on your device stays until you remove it. You can:
- Delete single jobs, or several at once, from the job list in the App
- Delete the App from your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Android device, which removes all of its data from that device
- Reset your device
Copies you have exported, shared or printed, and any personal device backups, are not removed by deleting the App. You manage those yourself.
11Legal basis for processing
All processing happens on your own device. The developer does not process any data you enter. Where data you enter counts as personal or special category data (for example, if a job record could identify a patient), the relevant lawful bases for you or your organisation are likely to be:
- UK GDPR Article 6(1)(e): processing needed for a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority, where a healthcare professional uses the App as part of their clinical duties.
- UK GDPR Article 9(2)(h): processing needed to provide health care, where this applies to your professional role.
12Your rights
The developer does not hold your data, so you use your data protection rights directly on your own device. You can view, correct, export or erase anything you've recorded at any time. There is no account to close and no copy on a server to request.
If you have a question or concern about how the App handles data, please contact us. You also have the right to complain to the UK supervisory authority:
Helpline: 0303 123 1113
13Children
PHEM Logger is for qualified or trainee healthcare professionals. It is not aimed at, and should not be used by, anyone under 18. The App collects no personal data from any user, so it does not knowingly collect data from children.
14Professional responsibility
PHEM Logger is a timestamping and logging tool only. It does not give clinical decision support, diagnostic guidance or treatment recommendations. Derived figures such as NEWS2 and no-flow or low-flow times are calculated from your entries and remain subject to your own clinical judgement. You are responsible for making sure your use of the App meets your professional duties, your employer's policies and the law, including UK GDPR where patient data is involved.
PHEM Logger is developed independently and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any NHS Trust, air ambulance service or other healthcare organisation.
15App store privacy disclosures
This policy matches the privacy information shown on each app store listing:
| Store | Disclosure |
|---|---|
| Apple App Store | App Privacy: Data Not Collected. No data is used to track you, linked to you or collected from the App. |
| Google Play | Data safety (Android app): No data collected and no data shared with third parties. Data is stored only on the device and can be deleted in the App or by uninstalling it. |
16Changes to this policy
If this policy changes (for example, if a future version adds an optional feature that sends data off your device), this page will be updated and the version and effective date above will change. Material changes will also appear in the App's release notes, and any new data handling will be opt-in.
